Education for Sustainable Development

What is Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)?

Education for Sustainable Development means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning; for example, climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, poverty reduction, and sustainable consumption.

It also requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behaviour and take action for sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development consequently promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios and making decisions in a collaborative way.

Challenges in Uganda

The challenges that ESD faces in Uganda are broad: As Uganda is a diverse country, it remains crucial to take into account that education always has to be locally relevant and culturally appropriate. At the same time, issues of sustainable development are often trans boundary and international, the most prominent example being the greenhouse effect.

Activities (2005-2014)

  • Preparatory and interpretation of ESD
  • Establishment of the Uganda ESD implementation strategy
  • Introduction to ESD at Universities
  • ESD training and orientation for teachers
  • ESD concept training for curriculum developers
  • Integration of ESD in National Curriculum
  • Integration of ESD in school systems, i.e.:
    • Peace building mechanisms
    • Greening
    • Waste management
    • Water harvesting
    • Energy saving
    • Economical and skills development
  • ESD workshops with parliamentarians, local government and communities


  • Further promotion to increase awareness of ESD
  • Creation of an institutionalized and continuous capacity building
  • Strengthen political will and support for action in ESD
  • Develop monitoring and evaluation through a proper documentation of ESD
  • Mainstreaming ESD at all levels of the education system
  • Particular attention to implementation of Climate Change education, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity education and reporting on ESD
